Our Story : How Smilescope Began

Sometimes, the best ideas start with the little things we see around us. For us, it was noticing how many people—especially kids—avoid brushing their teeth or dread going to the dentist.

We saw it in our classmates, our siblings, and honestly, even in ourselves. Dental check-ups were often skipped because they were inconvenient, too expensive, or just plain scary. It made us wonder : what if taking care of your teeth didn’t feel like such a chore? What if it could actually be simple and even fun?

That one question sparked something big.

At just 14 years old, we took on the challenge—and that’s how Smilescope was created.

We designed Smilescope to help people take control of their oral health from the comfort of home. It’s a portable dental device that connects to your electronic devices, letting users clearly see hidden areas in their mouth. It helps spot cavities, plaque, and other early signs of dental problems—before they become painful or expensive to fix. We also added a dental gel applicator for hard-to-reach areas, and paired it with an app that includes AI-powered diagnosis, appointment booking, educational tips, and even a kid-friendly minigame to make brushing less boring.

 The Journey So Far

We first shared Smilescope at the 13th Regional Congress Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists in Penang, Malaysia—and to our surprise, we brought home two awards:

  • 🥈 Silver Medal – Outstanding Award for Presentation

  • 🏅 Bronze Medal – Special Award for Creativity & Innovation

Soon after, we were selected to appear on ASTRO’s INNOVATHON (Season 2), a national reality TV show that features inventors. Out of eight schools, we were proudly awarded the title “Saintis Muda Innovathon.”

Since then, we’ve continued to grow—competing in various online innovation competitions and winning each one. But more than that, we’ve seen how an idea that started in a classroom can go on to help people in the real world.

Smilescope isn’t just a device. It’s our way of reminding people that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it just takes a little spark—and a lot of teamwork.
